Taming Temptation During the Silly Season (Without Missing the Joy)

Being human means we’re always seeking joy, pleasure, and that feeling of deep satisfaction and contentment. I’m speaking your language, right?

And that’s exactly why food temptation can feel so powerful, especially during the festive season. Parties, gatherings, grazing tables, gifted treats, late nights and a break from routine… we’re surrounded by beautifully presented, highly tempting foods, often placed right in front of us on a silver platter (sometimes literally).

It’s easy for all of us (yes, including me) to reach for the quick fix. That instant hit. That “just one won’t hurt” moment.

But let’s pause for a moment.

If you usually eat well, you probably know the aftermath all too well. I’m talking about the ultra-processed, hyper-palatable, can’t-stop-at-one foods, the sugary, salty, preservative-laden “platter junk” that shows up on cheese and biccie boards, at happy hour, or arrives neatly wrapped as festive gifts.

These foods don’t love us back.

And our bodies let us know. The next day can feel like a food hangover, waking up achy, tired, sluggish, thirsty, foggy, unmotivated, and just off. Not because you lacked willpower, but because your body has spent the night trying to process food that offers very little nourishment for your cells, organs, hormones, or brain.

This doesn’t just affect digestion. It can disrupt sleep, mood, emotions, energy, and hormone balance and yet in the moment, these foods are designed to override our internal signals, pulling us back for seconds.

Here’s the important part.

Consistently nourishing yourself builds resilience. The more often you choose foods that truly support your body, the easier it becomes to navigate temptation, even during the silly season (yes… I know, eye roll).

This season isn’t about being perfect with food, it’s about enjoying the moments without paying for them the next day.

6 Simple Ways to Tame Temptation (Without Deprivation)

1. Never arrive hungry

Have a whole-food snack or meal with protein and fibre before events. This alone can change everything.

2. Hydrate first (and often)

Thirst is often mistaken for hunger. Start with chilled water, sparkling water, or a spritzer with lemon or lime — and sip water between alcoholic drinks.

3. Prioritise protein

Protein at every meal helps you feel fuller for longer and reduces cravings.

4. Don’t skip meals

Skipping meals makes you far more likely to dive head-first into snack platters and grab-and-go foods.

5. Boost your fibre

Leafy greens, fresh vegetables, and whole fruits help fill you up, feed your gut microbes, and keep hunger steady.

6. Bring your own

Create a nourishing grazing platter with foods you love or simple salads with fresh produce without the heavy seed oil dressings . Check out our salad recipes here. So you won’t feel deprived, and you’ll feel far better the next day.

Supporting your body with simple, nourishing choices doesn’t take the joy out of celebrations; it actually allows you to enjoy them more. Better energy. Better sleep. Better mood. And far fewer “why did I eat that?” mornings.
