Do you often feel drained, sluggish, or foggy-headed before the day’s even begun?
You’re not alone. In our fast-paced world, low energy is one of the most common complaints, but it doesn’t have to be your norm.
Here are 5 simple ways to boost your energy, starting today:

1. Stay Hydrated
It’s easy to forget, but hydration plays a major role in how energised and clear-headed you feel. Even mild dehydration can cause headaches, fatigue, and trouble concentrating. Sometimes thirst can show up as tiredness or leave you feeling flat and unfocused.
Why hydration matters:
Water is essential for every cell in your body to function properly. When you’re even slightly dehydrated, your energy levels, focus, and mood can take a hit.
What happens overnight:
During sleep, your body is busy repairing and restoring, regulating hormones, consolidating memories and supporting the brain’s natural waste-clearance processes. Rehydrating in the morning helps replace fluids lost overnight and sets you up for the day ahead.
Morning boost:
Start your day with a large glass of filtered water. Add:
- Juice of ½ a fresh lemon
- A pinch of sea salt
This simple combo replenishes lost electrolytes and supports hydration at a cellular level.
Hydration targets:
- Women: 1.8–2.7 litres/day
- Men: 2.5–3.7 litres/day
Or aim for 35ml per kg of body weight, adjusting for heat, exercise, and individual needs.
Tip: Keep a clean, non-plastic water bottle with you throughout the day and sip often, not just when you feel thirsty.
2. Prioritise Quality Sleep
It’s not just about getting more sleep—it’s about better sleep. Poor quality sleep can leave you feeling foggy and flat, even after 8 hours in bed. Stress, blood sugar swings and nighttime stimulation (like screens or alcohol) can disrupt your natural sleep cycles, leaving you feeling less restored the next day.
Why sleep matters:
Good sleep doesn’t just boost energy—it sharpens thinking, improves mood, supports your immune system, and enhances emotional regulation.
Better sleep starts with better habits:
- Wind down by switching off from work and screens at least 1 hour before bed
- Get morning sunlight on your skin and in your eyes to regulate your internal clock
- Help reduce cortisol (your stress hormone) in the evening with calming rituals, that help your body wind down
Tip: Create a nightly wind-down routine with dim lights, light stretching, and no emails or social media after 8pm.

3. Fuel Your Body Wisely
Most of us are over-fed but under-nourished—and that’s a recipe for fatigue. The quality of your food directly impacts your energy, focus, and mood. Think of food as fuel. Poor fuel, poor energy.
What to eat for lasting energy:
Focus on whole, nutrient-dense foods that nourish your body deeply:
- Lean proteins
- Healthy fats (like avocado, nuts, seeds and olive oil)
- Lots of fresh colourful fruits and vegetables
- Whole food carbs like sweet potato, legumes, quinoa, and gluten-free oats
- Fermented foods or organic dairy (if tolerated)
Avoid highly processed foods loaded with sugars, additives and refined carbs, which can contribute to energy spikes and crashes that leave you feeling depleted.
Tip: Build meals around protein first, then fibre, and healthy fats to stabilise blood sugar and energy.

4. Move More (Even a Little)
Ironically, the less you move, the more tired you feel. Movement helps your body generate energy by improving circulation, oxygen flow, and cellular function. Staying still too long—especially sitting—slows everything down.
Why movement matters:
Even short bursts of movement can increase energy, improve mood, and sharpen focus. Your body doesn’t just want movement, it needs it to function at its best.
Daily exercise is essential for overall health, but it’s not the whole picture. Consistent movement throughout the day is just as important, especially if you have a sedentary lifestyle. Feeling sluggish, yawning often, or just feeling a bit “meh”? That’s your body signalling the need to move.
Incorporate incidental movement:
- Stand during phone calls
- Take a short walk between tasks
- Stretch every hour
- Run quick errands on foot
- Use stairs instead of the lift
Small movements add up, your body (and brain) will thank you.
Tip: Set a timer to remind yourself to move or stretch every hour. Even just 2 minutes of movement can break the sluggish cycle and boost your energy instantly.
5. Manage Stress Before It Manages You
Chronic stress is one of the biggest silent energy drains. Your body interprets stress, whether it’s from emails or parenting, as a threat, triggering a fight-or-flight response. Over time, this constant pressure can drain your energy, disrupt healthy hormone regulation and affect mental clarity.
Good news: You can’t always eliminate stress, but you can learn to manage your response to it.
Simple ways to support resilience:
- Daily movement and nourishing food
- Relaxation techniques like breathwork, yoga, or meditation
- Journaling thoughts or gratitude
- Doing what brings you joy (reading, gardening, music, nature)
- Talking to someone—friends, family, or a professional
Try this: Each day, carve out 10 minutes just for you. No screens, no responsibilities, just space to breathe and recharge.
